The earthworm is truly remarkable - Chef de la Maison Community Garden

  • Natural soil engineers: They aerate the ground as they tunnel, allowing water and oxygen to reach plant roots.

  • Nutrient recyclers: Their digestion breaks down organic matter, turning dead leaves and food scraps into rich, fertile soil (vermicompost).

  • Soil structure experts: Their castings (worm poo) are full of beneficial microbes and improve soil texture and fertility.

  • Carbon heroes: By helping organic matter decompose efficiently, they contribute to carbon cycling and storage in soil.

No wonder Charles Darwin said, “It may be doubted whether there are many other animals which have played so important a part in the history of the world.”

At Chef de la Maison our community gardens are not only for wellbeing, wellness and community supply. They are educational. We celebrate the bees, the earthworms and the planet. It’s inspiring and it not only bring change to how we sustainably eat, we also manage waste foods such as egg shells better than ever before. We learn about the cycle and how we must convert waste back into nutrient rich soil.
